Sri Lanka’s Indigenous Medicine and Ayurvedic practices represent an unparalleled legacy that has evolved over millennia. This concept paper, “Empowerment through Knowledge: Unveiling Sri Lanka’s Indigenous and Ayurvedic Treatment Plan,” highlights the potential of the Faculty of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo (FIM UoC), to position the Western Province as a Cultural Health Consultancy Hotspot. Developed by Capt. Harsha Govinda Koralearachchi, a member of the Western Province Governor’s Special Committee for Tourism Promotion, this initiative aims to integrate Sri Lanka’s rich indigenous medical heritage into the tourism sector. By offering specialized consultancy services during designated “Cultural Health Hotspot” hours, this concept fosters education, heritage preservation, and sustainable tourism, promoting Sri Lanka as a global destination for cultural and health tourism.
The concept paper provides a comprehensive roadmap for collaboration between academia and tourism, offering tourists, expatriates, and locals access to ancient Ayurvedic wisdom. This strategic initiative is designed to elevate the Western Province’s appeal by encouraging longer tourist stays, supporting the local economy, and ensuring the continuity of Sri Lanka’s invaluable medical heritage.

I would like to introduce the purpose and significance of this report.
This detailed proposal was prepared with the goal of improving healthcare services at the National Ayurveda Teaching Hospital (NATH), particularly in the area of dependable patient care. It is based on my personal experiences and observations during the hospitalization of Dr. Gamini Dharmawardhana Bandara Kalawana, my father-in-law and former Ayurvedic Commissioner of Uva Province. The report outlines the urgent need for modern medical technology to support Ayurvedic treatments in order to meet the rising healthcare demands of Sri Lankan citizens.
This proposal aims to establish a dependable care unit at NATH, equipped with modern technology to bridge the gap between traditional Ayurveda practices and contemporary medical advancements, ultimately benefiting the nation’s health care system.
